Swimming Pool Myths

Debunking Swimming Pool Myths

When it comes to swimming pools, there are loads of myths. Whether it’s having to wait a certain amount of time after eating or scary stories about chlorine, myths abound. If you’re thinking of building a pool or are just curious, you may want to know that not all myths are true.

Let’s debunk some common myths surrounding swimming pools so you can enjoy your time splashing around this summer.

You need to wait an hour before swimming after eating

One of the most common beliefs about swimming is that you need to wait one hour before swimming after eating. While it is possible that overworking your muscles in the pool after eating can cause cramps, it’s not that likely. But if you’re worried about getting cramps, eating a light meal and easing into swimming will help ensure this myth doesn’t come true.

Peeing in the pool will change the water color

Admittedly a joking and funny myth, many people spread the rumor that peeing in the pool will turn the water blue. Throughout the years, parents and pool owners would spread the myth to keep little ones from having accidents in the pool. The truth is that, no, peeing in the pool will not change the water color whatsoever.

If your water is clear, it’s clean

You’ve heard that appearances can be deceiving, and the same goes for swimming pools. Even though you might have a crystal clear pool, its true health is measured by chemistry.  Make sure you test the water weekly and monitor the levels.

If you can smell chlorine, it means there’s too much

Many people believe that if you can smell the chlorine, it means there’s too much in the pool. But the truth is that the opposite is actually true. This is because chlorine attaches to bacteria and creates chloramines, and when shocking the pool, the chloramines get into the air. This means that if you smell it, it’s not working in the water and you actually have to add more chlorine.

Chlorine can turn your hair different colors

A big myth surrounding pools is that chlorine can turn hair different colors, particularly blonde hair turning green. However, chlorine is actually not the one to blame in this situation – it’s actually copper from algaecides. However, any discoloration can be removed with a shampoo that strips color or by using a conditioner prior to swimming.

You’ll burn your eyes if you open them underwater

If you’re sensing a pattern, you’ll notice that chlorine is at the center of many swimming pools myths. This time, it’s the myth that if you open your eyes underwater, they’ll burn from the chlorine. However, the cause of burning actually comes from an unbalanced pH level, so simply monitoring the levels will help avoid burning.

Saltwater pools don’t need chlorine

Many people opt for a saltwater pool because they don’t want chlorine, but the truth is that even these pools need chlorine. In order to be sanitary, the saltwater is forced across a metal cell with an electrical current causing chlorine to be created through electrolysis. Another misconception is that saltwater pools don’t need to be shocked, but to keep things clean, they do.

Hopefully, now you feel more confident in your swimming pool knowledge and can put those myths to rest. If you still have some questions regarding pool maintenance, contact one of our professionals at Artesian Pools today.

These are the 3 Types of In Ground Pools

In-ground pools are the perfect long term investment in your home and family!

A swimming pool is the icing on the cake when it comes to an aesthetic backyard. Not only that, but it is the classic hub for get-togethers where family and friends can enjoy music and fun. When thinking about the impact a pool has on your family’s home and social life, Only the best materials and types can go in to truly represent what makes your house a home. Look at this list, and find us on artesianpools.com to learn more about our types of in-ground pools.

The three main Types of in ground pools are vinyl, fiberglass and concrete. The main differences in these materials are based on long-term maintenance, initial cost, aesthetic, and build time and strategy. These are also the main points we will be looking at in this guide.

Types of In-Ground Pools

Vinyl Pools

Vinyl pools are defined by the vinyl sheet that finishes the pool’s build. This makes its build time around one to two weeks. Pool builders will dig the hole of the pool, adding the pool walls as well. When that is finished, the base of the pool is coated in a thin layer of concrete to ensure a smooth pool floor. A vinyl sheet is then placed over the pool walls and the pool base.

The initial costs of Vinyl pools average around $30k- $40k. If properly maintained, the vinyl cover will not need to be replaced too often. Vinyl replacements usually cost around $5000, but also catching and treating tears can cost much less if done in a timely manner.

Maintaining these pools is not to hard because they do not stain like concrete. However, a little more care must be taken into monitoring chemicals in the pool. Too high chemical concentration can thin the sheet, causing tears and holes to form.

These pools are generally the middle-tier in expense and do not require professional experience to maintain properly.

Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools are a type of in-ground pool which utilizes an already made pool frame that is inserted into a hole in the ground. This makes the price vary, usually from $5000 – $40k depending on the size and shape of the pool.

Maintenance on Fiberglass pools are the easiest among the three types of inground pools. Just check the pool chemistry and clean it regularly. They are the least customizable and therefore not the first choice, but the least expensive.

Fiberglass pool installation can take as little as one week to complete. They are quick to build and cheap, but do not offer a great amount of customization or quality.

Concrete Pools

Concrete pools offer the most customization and creativity, but at more cost. Designs can really express the owner’s creativity and reflect the style of the house. These start from a design which is then dug into the ground. The base is covered in gunite or concrete and then smoothed out.

Though concrete pools do take much longer to install, they last long as well and do not need to be replaced as often as either fiberglass and vinyl pools.

These types of inground pools can be pricey, ranging from $30k – $70k. The maintenance on these pools are very minimal however. If the pool suffers damage, it may need to be replaced, but it is highly unlikely.

These are the best pools for a growing family because of the low risk and low maintenance. Visit Artesian Pools where our dedication to the cornerstone of family fun and love still holds strong after over 40 years.

Pool Maintenance

The Best Tips on Identifying Pool Problems

Owning a home with a swimming pool means opportunities to enjoy the sunshine and have fun with your family. Running into pool problems can be a nasty break from all that rest and relaxation, however.

If you experience common pool problems, your best first tip is not to worry: they are usually easy and not costly to deal with. Identifying and resolving these problems yourself them will give you more time to enjoy your pool and a safer, cleaner swimming area.

Once you’ve pinned down your problems and solved them, it’s also easier to avoid them in the future through weekly maintenance and monitoring.

What Causes Your Common Pool Problems?

Some common pool problems you will face are mineral accumulation, cloudy water, algae, and burning eyes.

Mineral buildups are caused by the minerals found naturally in your water source. They are carried by the water and then adhere to your swimming pool surfaces and in your filter once the water evaporates.

Debris and Chemical Imbalances

Burning eyes, a strong chlorine odor, and a cloudy pool are the result of improper chemical levels.  Debris is unsightly and can clog your filter, but otherwise is mostly just a nuisance and easily dealt with.

Maintaining the chemical levels in your swimming pool such as pH, total alkalinity and calcium will keep your pool sparkling and clear, solving most common pool problems.

If you have calcium rings in your pool and want to fix this,  purchase muriatic acid solution and try to scrub it off. Use gloves and eye protection to ensure safety. If you are dealing with especially hard water, you should not use chlorine with calcium hypochlorite. Your pool chemical retailer should be able to provide an alternative chlorine product for you.

Correct chemical levels will solve not only mineral buildups but also cloudy water as well.

It is a common misconception that chlorine causes burning eyes. The real culprit is a chemical called Trichloramine (NCI3.) This also causes the odor we associate with pools.

One of the most important steps, if you are having pool problems, is to find a store that sells chemicals and pool related items. You can find testing kits that will measure and monitor your calcium, pH and alkalinity balance. After determining which levels may be off, you can target the right chemicals to bring your pool back to normal levels.

Enjoy a Clean Pool Year Round

The main pool problem people face is in not using theirs. Pools are meant to have fun with and gather around. The best way to keep a healthy pool is to use it. From short swim to pool parties, the more you use your pool, the more familiar you will be with it.

Now that you know how to take care of a pool, why not look into buying one? Visit Artesian Pools to see how we can help you choose the best pool for you!

Famous Swimming Pool Scenes

If there is one thing that serves as a status symbol, it’s a beautiful inground pool. It shows that you are living the life. It stands as a triumph of your hard work. At least it is supposed to, but what if it means something else? These are questions filmmakers ask when they include pools in their movies and tv shows. Everything in a film has a meaning.

Famous swimming pool scenes have been a hallmark of cinema for many years. Films all the way back to the 1940s have used swimming pools in them. Films such as It’s A Wonderful Life (1946), The Great Gatsby (2013), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) and more.

Today we will look at these films and others, pinpointing five of the most iconic pool scenes in a film. Be aware that spoilers might lay ahead.

Famous Swimming Pool Scenes

Famous Swimming Pool Scenes have made up a lot of the cinematic landscape over the last decade

It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

Let’s start this list with a certified classic. This pool scene helps show a strong characteristic of the main characters. The main characters are attending a dance in the school gym. A disgruntled classmate decides to open the gym floor up. Below the floor, of course, is a swimming pool. Unaware of the opening floor, our main characters dance leads them over the edge. Ending their happy dance sequence. Least it that was the intention. Showing a playful and persistent spirit. Our main characters drop into the water and continue dancing.

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

As odd as it is artistic, Rocky Horror Picture Show is a timeless film. Near the end of the film our titular villain Dr. Frank-N-Furter. does a song number. The number takes him into a pool. The song in question is “Don’t dream it, be it”. This scene is important because of a few bits of symbolism. Most prominent is when Dr. Frank-N-Furter floats on a Titanic life preserver. This is foretelling his oncoming demise. After the performance, Frank-N-Furter and Rocky plunge into the pool. Falling to the before-mentioned demise.

Gremlins (1984)

The cutest horror film ever created, Gremlins introduced the world to the Mogwai. There are two rules to Mogwai. Don’t get them wet and don’t feed them after midnight. Both of these rules go out the window in Gremlins. Especially when the leader of the Gremlins dives right into a pool. This unleashes an army of Gremlins upon the town. What happens next is adorable hectic chaos, hijinks, and terror. While that might not sound great, Gremlins makes for a delightful classic. One that has people coming back to it time and time again.

Sexy Beast (2000)

The film starts with the pool as a status symbol. Soon it becomes a parallel for the main character’s journey through the film. It opens with a retired con man lounging beside his pool. We get an impression on the kind of man our lead is. When out of nowhere, a boulder comes cascading down the mountain. Ending up lodged in his beautiful, pristine pool. All the while, showing scenes of a woman arriving at his hillside villa. The sudden boulder disturbing his relaxation mirrors the film.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

So many classic films on this list. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has Matthew Broderick in his prime. They break into a random house to use its pool. At first, Cameron doesn’t want to get in the pool. Finally, he plunges down into the water, floating to the bottom. There he stays until Matthew Broderick’s character dives down to lift him back him. In this scene, the pool is a stand-in for depression. With Ferris Bueller lifting him out of it. This is one of several clear visual subtexts used through the film. For this list though, the pool is the one that speaks most to us.

Famous Swimming Pool Scenes

These are far from the only famous swimming pool scenes. If we went into every scene, we would be here all day long. What does your swimming pool mean for you? Many see it as a status symbol or as a way to bring their family together. It could be a staple of a new retirement. Regardless of the reason, Artesian Pools is here to build it for you.
