We have all heard, at one time or another, the cliche “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. And so how, you may ask, does this have anything to do with a pool liner blog?

We thought you might ask, so we have a simple answer. If it’s time to replace your pool liner, knowing that they last, on average, about 15 years, you may just want to go with something easier on the eyes.

Whether you know it or not, a pool liner is an integral part of your pool. The liner is the only part between your chemically-treated pool water and the pool wall itself. So, obviously, it is important to get it right the first time around.

So, would you like to know how to spot when you need to replace your liner?

Three Easy Ways To Tell You Need A New Liner

  1. Your Liner Is Fading. Direct sunlight does not bode well for pool liners. The harmful UV rays will make the pool liner brittle, resulting in the potential for punctures and tears. Pinhole leaks can form and, to the naked eye, we would never see the damage. The only way we would even know is when it’s too late and the water has already dissipated.

Pro Tip: When getting a new liner, take a ‘before’ picture with as accurate a liner color as possible. Take a picture every year, thereafter, for color comparison.

  2. Water Loss. There’s always some evaporation or kid horseplay to divert water from your pool. Some water loss is completely normal, but losing anything over an inch a week is definitely outside of the norm.

If you do notice the level going down, check for any punctures or tears. If you mysteriously find a tear, you may be able to get away with a quick patch job. If it’s a large hole or tear, an immediate replacement is a must.

  3. Do You See Wrinkles? If you see any wrinkles, this only means one thing: your pool is telling you that your pool maintenance has been lacking. It’s showing you its vinyl has become broken down and brittle. Unfortunately, there is no way to reverse this condition once the wrinkles have appeared. Seek out a pool liner as soon as possible.

Replacing Your Pool Liner

While it may be a hassle to replace your pool liner, it is much easier and less expensive than doing major repair to your pool walls.
